Theatre: INOX, Ghatkopar, Mumbai
Show Time: 5:31 PM

C/O Saira Banu is the story of Saira Banu and Joshua played by Manju Warrier and Shane Nigam. Joshua’s father (Mohanlal, voice only) went missing when he was small and then Saira Banu takes care of Joshua. The story is about a Mother – Son relationship, how Shane gets into trouble and they cope up with it.

The film has sentiments, comedy, thrill, story, good songs and everything that a movie needs.

I would say that this is a come back film for Manju Warrier. There is a high possibility that she would get a few awards for this.

Amala Akkineni who has made a come back after 25 years has done well. Shane Nigam too has performed well.

Sometimes you end up feeling that you know what is going to happen but then something else happens. The story is simple and its a well made movie.

Overall, a must watch movie

Positives
+ Brilliant performance by Manju Warrier
+ Good performance by Shane Nigam, Amala
+ Good Direction
+ A story with a message
+ Good Songs

Negatives

– Felt a little lag here and there

Movie Rating: 4/5

Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol is the story of a married couple who have a boring and routine life. Ulahannan (Mohanlal) keeps himself busy with his work with no time for his family, whereas Annyamma (Meena) after taking care of her regular chores passes her time watching the TV serials. The attitude of the couple changes are an incident.

The Mohanlal and Meena combination has ones again pulled crowds to the theaters. Some of Mohanlal’s expressions are really impressive. Anoop Menon has also done a good job. Asha Shareth had a very small role but she did a good job too. The performances of all others were also up to the mark

Some of the locations and camera works were brilliant. It would be a treat to watch them again on a Blu Ray.

Even though there were scenes of drinking, the people involved did not show any over reactions after drinking, like most of the other movies do.

There were a few songs in the movie which were good and so were the BGM. The visuals shown in the songs were really great.

The message this movie gives is that your children will learn looking at what you do. Therefore people should go to watch this movie with their families.

Overall, a good family movie

Positives
+ Mohanlal and Meena combination
+ Above average fun and family movie
+ Some great locations
+ A nice family story
+ Good Songs

Negatives

– Felt some small lags here and there

Finally after two weeks of wait the movie released in Mumbai theaters on 23rd July.

Most of the movie trailer and teasers these days create record hits online however fail to impress in the box office as well as the audience. However, according to me this movie is much better than I thought.

The story is about the father Raghu and son Abi played by Biju Menon and Asif Ali respectively. The story revolves around Asif Ali’s love life and life after the break up with his girlfriend. Meanwhile Biju Menon, who is a cop, meets his ex-love. Asha Shareth, a mother of two and a home maker expects her husband Biju Menon to give her a bit more care but it does not happen until things change in Biju Menon’s life.

As always Biju Menon has given a great performance. Sudheer Karamana has also done a good job. Asha Shareth did not have much to do but side has done well too. Shoubin also does not have much to do but did his part well. For a newcomer, Rejisha has done good too.

There are 3 songs in the movie, not too lengthy just 2-3 minutes each.

One thing I found a bit odd was Biju Menon and Asha Shareth do not look old enough to have a son of Asif Ali’s age. A little bit of grey hair would have made a lot of difference.

People clapped during many scenes and I did see many smiling faces at the end of the show, which means people enjoyed the movie. The movie has a lot of comedy dialogues here and there and is a good family entertainer.

Positives
+ Biju Menon and Sudheer Karamana, good performance
+ Good Direction
+ Good family entertainer

Negatives
– Biju Menon and Asha Shareth are shown as too young to be the parents of Asif Ali
– Climax scene.

NO MORE Home Video releases

NO MORE Home Video releases

By Rajiv Nedungadi

Due to high rate of piracy, copyright holders of home video have not always been able to recover the money they have invested, by selling DVDs and VCDs. As many companies are in a loss we are already seeing that 40% of movies that release in Malayalam in a year, do not even release on a DVD. The DVD rights of some movies are taken by TV channels and is shown only on television but are not released on home video.

When a DVD is released, a rip is uploaded to torrent websites within hours. Due to high speed and low price of internet, people end up downloading the movies and watch them but do not realize the amount of money lost for the company who has invested in lacs to get the copyrights.

People say that they download illegally because they live abroad and have no way to watch the movies in their area or get the dvd. If these people invested twenty minutes to search for a torrent site, it would take them less than ten minutes to search for a website that ships the movie dvd overseas to their door step. So, its not the availability, its about spending money. Everyone wants to watch the movie even if its not worth it but no one wants to pay even for a good movie.

Just because of people who upload and distribute the movie and because many people download that pirated copy, everyone including the genuine buyers will soon have to wait for the new movies to either come in a theater near their place or will have to wait for the same to come on the TV as the home videos release would not happen.

Some companies have already started to release the movies on Youtube legally so that they can at least generate some revenue from there.

Ten years back, renting out VHS, VCDs and DVDs was a common business. People could see one rental shop in every nook and corner but in the last few years, almost all of these rental shows have closed down. For more than 12 years, I used to buy music and movie discs from a store in Kerala when ever I used to visit there but last year due to low business even that shop closed. They were a shop that used to supply movies to all the near by shops in the area. Thanks to uploaders and downloaders, they are not just hurting the copy right holders but also thousands of other famalies who made a living by renting or selling movies and music.

If people do not stop uploading and downloading, a couple of years from now, no one will have anything to upload and download as there wont be a DVD release in Malayalam, at least. So stop stealing and buy legal.

How to build a Personal Home Video Library.

How to build a Personal Home Video Library.

By Rajiv Nedungadi

Well, this article is not about building a digital library of movies but it’s about building a Physical collection of movies on DVD and Blu Ray.

It may sound weird to some people when they hear others saying that they buy DVDs and Blu Rays and collect them during this digital age, when movies are available to watch online legally by various websites and also legally on YouTube. Some people may also find it funny when they hear that people pay and buy the DVD of the movie when they can get it for free illegally. But only a collector knows the value of his collection. People who don’t want to see the home video industry die or are true movie lovers, would watch movies legally than the many illegal ways available today.

Storage

Firstly, to be a collector, you need to make sure that you have enough place to store your titles. If there is a problem of storing your collection, it will be difficult to accommodate a growing library.

Purchasing titles

Ones you have made enough space or storage area, you can decide which title and format to buy. VCDs have become history so you can choose from DVD or Blu Ray. DVDs are cheaper compared to Blu Ray discs but once you know the quality a BD provides, you would always prefer a BD over a DVD. BDs are expensive, but Hollywood or English titles come with Special Features or extra discs bundled with the BDs so its worth the money most of the times.

A DVD has a shelf life of 30 to 100 years and so has the BD (predicted). I still have DVDs that I bought more than 10 years ago and they work flawlessly. Well, it’s not just about collecting your favorite movies but its also about carefully keeping the collection so that it plays when your mood demands.

Coming back to selecting a movie to buy, there are two types of collectors, one who prefers quality and the other one prefers quantity.

For people who go for the quality, the first thing they need is to create a list of movies that they would like to have in their collection. However, if they are not desperate to get a title, they could wait till some online or retail store provides it at a deal price.

I have been a regular customer at Amazon.in and I always wait for the best offers on the site for my favorite movies. Most of the English Blu Ray titles in my collection has come with 50% discount or more. I have hardly bought any titles on MRP. I even have titles that I bought at 80% off. Over and above the discount that is provided by Amazon.in, I also use Amazon vouchers that I keep getting and save more money.

How do I get the Amazon vouchers? I don’t get them free but I earn them. There are many websites you will find, where they send out surveys to you after you register with them. Once you complete the survey, you get points, which are credited to your account. After you have collected a certain amount of points, you can redeem them for online shopping vouchers. Some sites give vouchers for Amazon, some for Flipkart etc.

Not all Indian movies release on a Blu Ray. Most of the regional movies release on VCD and DVD only. There are many websites who ship regional movies throughout the world. So, for serious movie lovers, they can get their favorite regional movie anywhere in the world.

If you have not seen a particular movie and want to know if it’s worth buying on home video, the best thing to do is check for reviews online and decide if you want to go for it or not.

Organizing the movies

The next thing about a collection is organizing it, if you have a large number of titles. People like me who has been collecting movies for more than 18 years, find it difficult to search for movies. To find a movie easily, I have kept all Malayalam VCDs in the TV cabinet inside the draws. I have arranged them alphabetically so that can search and get them easily. As I do not have too many English and Hindi VCD, I have just stacked them in the cabinets. Similarly you can also organize the DVD and Blu Ray collection.

As Blu Ray is a premium product, I have given it a little more respect. I have organized my collection of 3D Blu Rays on 2 shelves along with the 24 James Bond movies. Another full row is specifically for movies which has multiple parts like Fast and Furious series, Expendable series, Spiderman series, superman series etc. Five of the rows have the other titles. I have not organized my Blu Ray collection alphabetically so far but would like to do it someday. You can also organize your collection genre wise, like Action, Romance, Comedy etc.

 Tracking your collection

When your collection starts increasing, you will need to keep a track of the titles. The easiest way to track the collection is using a spreadsheet. If you do not have Microsoft Office Excel installed, you can go for any open source and free one like Open Office or so. It becomes important for you to track the collection mostly because you might tend to forget about some titles when your collection grows. If you lend a title to someone, you can also mention that in your spreadsheet.

There are also some freeware and paid software that can be used to track your collection. Some of the programs just need you to enter the name of the movie and it will get added from websites like imdb.com etc.

Conclusion

if you love movies and like to watch it at home legally, build a private library, save the home video industry.

Thank you for taking time and reading…Happy Collection 🙂
